Vertigo in Black Canyon

Black Canyon of the Gunnison

Vertigo is the feeling that you are spinning when you are not actually spinning.  It can be triggered by looking down from a high place, such as the sheer cliffs of Black Canyon.

We love heights and always walk right out to the edge of a cliff.  But when we peered over the black rock and saw the Gunnison River flowing 1800 feet straight down below us, the feeling of vertigo was immediate and intense.

“Some are longer, some are deeper, some are narrower, and a few have walls as steep,” writes geologist Wallace Hansen.  “But no other canyon in North America combines the depth, narrowness, sheerness and somber counterbalance of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.”
