Kayaker Rides the Rapids in Jasper National Park

While hiking above Maligne Canyon in Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada, we stopped to watch some kayakers brave the rapids in the Maligne River.  It took about 10 minutes for the young man in the white kayak to muster the courage to ride the rough river.  All the while, his friends downstream shouted encouragement and advice.  At one point before he took off, the kayaker noticed that Theresa was watching him bury his head in his hands.  He yelled to her, “I’m not afraid!”  And sure enough he wasn’t, as this video shows the kayaker moments later expertly navigating the rushing waters.

Mom, Why Are You Taking a Picture of Nothing?

Polychrome Mountains in Denali National Park

We were riding on a bus that brings tourists into the heart of Denali National Park in Alaska.  The sun broke through the clouds to light up the beautiful Polychrome Mountains.  Their red, yellow and brown rocks were laid down 60 million years ago when volcanoes erupted frequently in this area.  The driver stopped the bus so we could enjoy the spectacular view.  We all took out our cameras, slid open the windows, and started snapping photos of the mountain mosaic.

That’s when an 8-year-old boy in the seat in front of us exclaimed, “Mom, why are you taking a picture of nothing?”

Special Thanks

We’d like to acknowledge and say thanks to a few special people who have really helped us on our trip:

We Have Wonderful Family and Friends

When things go terribly wrong in your life, that’s when you discover the quality and strength of the relationships you have made over the years.  This past week has been a stressful and challenging time for us, but our family and friends have lifted our spirits with encouragement and positive advice.  Thank you all for the wonderful things you have written to us:

Traditional Irish Blessing

This wonderful Facebook post was from my friend, Sean O’Shaughnessey, who by the way writes a terrific blog called Confident Investor.  Here is what he wrote:

My good friend Timm Martin is taking a many month vacation to explore the beauty of our national parks.  Sold the house, quit the jobs, and packed the RV for the open road and the hiking trails of America.  I offer this traditional Irish Blessing to him and his wife at the beginning of their journey:

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind always be at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
May the rain fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

If you get a chance, please sign our guestbook.  We will certainly miss all our family and friends while we’re on the road.  But if you sign our guestbook, then we can take you with us on our adventure!  Smile

Join Us!

All our friends and family know that you’re all invited to join us somewhere along the journey. Our planned route shows the places we’ll visit.  Have a look and then contact us when you have an idea of where you want to meet us and/or when. Our plans are flexible, with the following few places we’d like to be on specific dates:

Stop 15 – Yosemite National Park California – March 24th
Stops 31-35 – Alaska – June through August
Stop 64 – Zion National Park Utah – November 4th

My brother David jokes that you’re all going to converge on the same date and place to join us! I doubt it! Our friends Lois and John have expressed interest in meeting us Denali in June. Hope they can make it!  Maybe you would like to visit one of the locations where we’ll be?

“Not all who wander are lost.” — Phrase on Timm’s Life is Good T-shirt

The People category and section is where we’ll discuss the people we meet on our journey. I can’t wait to learn about all types of people from different parts of the country and the world, all joined together by the desire to explore and wander.
