Black Canyon is Really Black

Timm stands along the edge of Black Canyon

Black Canyon of the Gunnison is aptly named because it really is black.  Not only are the canyon walls incredibly steep, making it hard for the sun to light the canyon.  But the canyon rock itself is also a very dark color.  This was one of our favorite parks because we both love heights, and in many places along the canyon rim, we could peer over the ledge and look straight down a couple thousand feet to the Gunnison River far below, giving us a terrific rush of vertigo.  Please check out our Black Canyon photo tour.
